Filter Cleaning and Maintenance

Pool filters do the quiet work of pulling debris, sunscreen residue, and dead algae out of the water so the rest of your system can keep the pool balanced. Cartridge filters in particular fill up gradually, and once they're saturated with fine particles the pump has to work harder to push water through them. If you've noticed your water looking slightly hazy even after regular chemical treatment, or your pressure gauge reading higher than normal, the filter is usually the first place to look.

A cartridge filter that's overdue for cleaning shows up in a few predictable ways. Reduced water flow at the returns, longer run times needed to keep the pool clear, and a pressure gauge sitting well above its clean baseline are the most common signals. Some owners also notice a musty smell near the equipment pad, which often means algae or organic buildup is trapped inside the cartridge pleats. None of these problems fix themselves with more chlorine, since the issue is mechanical, not chemical.

What the cleaning involves

A proper filter cleaning starts with shutting down the pump and relieving pressure in the tank before it's opened. The cartridge element is removed and inspected for tears, warping, or hardened mineral deposits that spraying alone won't remove. From there it gets a thorough hose-down between the pleats, working from the top to flush trapped debris out rather than pushing it deeper in. If the cartridge shows heavy buildup or calcium scaling, a soak in a filter cleaning solution is used to break down what a hose can't touch.

While the filter is apart, it's also a good time to check the O-rings, the tank gasket, and the housing for cracks or wear that could cause leaks once the system is back under pressure. We check the pressure gauge and multiport or push-pull valve while everything is open, since a filter problem sometimes overlaps with a valve or gauge issue that would otherwise get blamed on the cartridge. Once reassembled, the system is restarted slowly and checked for proper pressure and flow before we consider the job done.

What affects timing and scope

How long the job takes depends mostly on how neglected the filter has been and how many cartridges the system uses. A single-cartridge residential system that's cleaned on a regular schedule is usually a fairly quick job. A multi-cartridge system with heavy calcium scaling or a cartridge that needs a chemical soak takes longer, since the soak itself needs time to work before rinsing. Backwashing, which applies to sand and DE filters rather than cartridge systems, is a separate process involving reversing water flow to flush debris out through a waste line, and we handle that differently when a pool uses that type of filter instead.

One mistake we see often is owners pressure-washing their own cartridges with a strong nozzle, which can tear the pleated fabric and shorten the filter's life considerably. Another is waiting too long between cleanings, which lets fine debris compact and calcify inside the pleats to the point where no amount of soaking will fully restore flow, meaning the cartridge needs replacing sooner than it should. Skipping the O-ring and gasket check is also common with rushed cleanings, and it's usually what leads to a leak showing up a few weeks later.

We approach filter maintenance as part of the overall health of the pool rather than an isolated task. A clean filter that isn't paired with balanced water chemistry won't stay clean for long, so our technicians look at the full picture each visit, including circulation time and chemical levels, not just the filter itself. Cartridges are handled by hand rather than left to soak unattended for arbitrary periods, and we replace elements that are past the point of effective cleaning rather than reinstalling something that will just clog again in a week.
